Types of custom enclosure housings we develop
We design, develop and create prototypes of custom enclosure housings for various products and industries.
Consumer Electronic Enclosures
With industrial design as part of our enclosure design services, we are well equipped to create creative & sleek enclosure designs for the consumer electronics industry.
Handheld & Wearable Products
Products that are meant to be held in hands or worn on the body need to be comfortable to use. We ensure this by ergonomic/form prototyping.
Outdoor Rugged Enclosures
Custom enclosures that are subjected to harsh environments need to meet certain standards for water ingress, impact resistance, exposure to chemicals, UV radiation and more.
Other Enclosures & Casings
We design and develop various types of custom enclosures for industrial, medical, electronic products in plastics, metals & wood materials.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are some types of product enclosures?
Product enclosures can be classified by material, operating conditions or industry. Based on material types, product enclosures are usually made of metals or plastics, sometimes wood and other materials. Based on operating conditions, product housings can be rated to prevent dust and water ingress, sustain extreme temperatures, UV rays, chemicals and more. By industry type, product enclosures can be made keeping in mind the needs of various industries like consumer electronics, medical devices, industrial etc.
What does custom enclosure design service include?
At Outdesign Co, our custom enclosure design service involves 4 steps: 1) Research: Researching and gathering the various technical, regulatory, functional and design requirements for a product enclosure. 2) Concept Design: Designing concepts and solutions for how the final product enclosure might look and work like. 3) Engineering: 3D CAD and engineering simulations to integrate the internal components and turn the concept design into a reliably engineered 3D CAD model ready for prototyping. 4) Prototyping: Using the 3D CAD documentation, we create actual physical prototypes of the product enclosure.
Can electronic product enclosures be customized?
Yes, product enclosures can have customizations that can be minor like placement of a logo, addition of graphics or decals, color changes and other minor modifications. Major customization of enclosures requires starting from scratch to create a new design concept and bringing it to prototyping and production.
How much does a custom product enclosure cost?
The cost of custom enclosure design services depends on the scope of services requested and engineering requirements of the enclosure, so its best to get a quote for your specific project. In general, a product in the consumer electronics industry requires an additional service of industrial design to create a sleek looking enclosure, this adds cost when compared to a product that is not customer-facing and does not require industrial design service. Similarly, for engineering requirements, an enclosure that requires IP68 water resistance will cost more than a simple housing that does not need any type of water-resistance.
What locations do you serve?
We serve clients worldwide and have worked with startups, entrepreneurs and businesses in 15+ countries, providing them with the best enclosure design services. The majority of our clients are based all across the US, from California to New York.
What are some commonly used materials for product enclosures?
The most commonly used materials for product enclosures are various types of plastics: ABS, HDPE, Acrylic, PP, Polycarbonate etc and metals like Aluminium, Steel sheets etc. Wood is used mainly for audio product enclosures. Plastics offer the freedom to design enclosures with beautiful shapes, scalability and cost-effectiveness. For electronics enclosures that require EMI waves to pass through, plastic enclosures are more practical. While metal enclosures offer durability, a full metal enclosure will result in a Faraday cage and will not allow EMI waves to pass through. Full metal enclosures for electronic devices make wireless communication challenging which is why plastic is a preferred choice for enclosures of electronic devices requiring wireless communication.
How do you create a product enclosure?
Start by forming a list of functional and design requirements that your plastic enclosure needs to meet and also the dimensions of the internal components it needs to enclose. Create a sketch or concept of how the final product enclosure would look and work like. Use a 3D CAD modeling software like Fusion 360 or Autodesk Inventor to model the enclosure in 3D and export it as STL or STP files. Use these files to 3D print or CNC machine your plastic enclosure and assemble it with the internal components. The choice of plastic depends on various factors like impact resistance, UV protection, sustainability, manufacturing pocess used and more. ABS, PC, PP, HDPE, Acrylic are some commonly used plastics for creating product enclosures.
How do you create a custom electronics enclosure?
Start by forming a list of functional and design requirements that your electronics enclosure needs to meet. This includes the information on the usage of the product, its operating conditions, regulatory requirements, marketing/design direction etc. Contact a product enclosure design company like Outdesign Co to get a quote on the design, development and manufacturing of your enclosure. Once you sign off the project, an industrial designer creates realistic design concepts of the enclosure, then an engineer turns those concepts into 3D CAD files ready for prototype manufacturing. A prototype of your enclosure is manufactured for testing and evaluation. Once the enclosure design is ‘frozen’ it is further optimized for mass-production.
